A few weeks ago I attended a forum on Black MSM (men who have sex with men) and HIV.
The statistic of 46% of all Black MSM are HIV positive but 2/3s don't know it has been flying around the media and CBOs. This message is potentially stigmatizing to a large group of men. Furthermore the sampling is not statistically meaningful. The CDC used a small sample size consisting of 444 Black men from five US cities. Most of the participants were from Baltimore, a city riddled with heroin and crack addiction.
This sample is not representative of African American men across the country. Furthermore, the "2/3s who are unaware of their status were self-reporting.
